    Surveillance video camera systems are utilized by the York Suburban School District on school property and on buses to enhance the safety of our students. The school district may use the information gathered for disciplinary and/or legal action for inappropriate behaviors as defined by district policy and guidelines.

    Did You Know...


    ...Each bus is required to complete two vehicle evacuation drills with its students each school year - one in September and one in March.


     ...It is estimated that the buses and vans servicing York Suburban School District students use 40,000 gallons of fuel each year.  



    Most buses make four runs during one day - an AM and PM secondary school run and an AM and PM elementary school run.

    ...Every driver must pass several background checks and successfully complete an extensive training checklist before being allowed to transport students.


    ...Camera systems are installed in the front and back of each full-size bus to ensure the safety of the students.




     ...It costs approximately $1.9 million per year to transport all York Suburban resident students.


    ...The District will transport roughly 2,610 students per day during the 2014-15 school year.



    About 8% of all students transported during the 2014-15 school year will be non-public or charter school students


      22% of the transportation budget will be spent on transporting special education students during the school year and extended school year.



     All bus stops are approved by the School Board prior to each school year.



     Every school day a combined 566 bus stops are used during the morning and afternoon bus routes.



    Each week buses transporting York Suburban resident students travel 2,249 miles.


      The District utilizes 27 buses, 2 minibuses, and 18 vans to transport students each school day.


     ...All vehicles used to transport students are equipped with Zonar, a GPS system that allows most activities of a vehicle to be tracked. 



     Numerous federal and academic studies have concluded that school buses are the safest form of ground transportation.



    The District’s transportation vendor, Durham School Services, has over 23,000 employees in 32 states.


      All kindergarten students are required to be picked up by a parent or guardian at their midday or PM bus stop.   


     ...A student must have a pass issued by a teacher in order to ride one of the two after school activity buses.



    The District provides transportation to resident students who attend schools that are located no more than ten miles from the nearest point of the school district boundary line.


    The Indian Rock Elementary School is the only school in the District without a walk zone.


      Postcards announcing the students’ transportation assignments will be mailed in July.




      There is a transportation “blackout” period from August 12, 2015 through August 26, 2015 during which no transportation changes will be made.    


     ...All transportation changes needed for the start of school must be requested before August 12, 2015.
