Curriculum Overview – Kindergarten
 
Language Arts
 
The Kindergarten Language Arts Curriculum follows the Pennsylvania Standards of teaching children to read, write, speak and listen. These skills and strategies are taught through a Comprehensive Reading/Writing Framework.
 
Beginning of Reading and Writing Workshop
  • Begin to recognize and use emergent reading strategies
  • Use print and picture cues
  • Apply letter sounds to writing
  • Utilize writing to convey a message
  • Recognize and use basic writing concepts (spacing, left to right, punctuation)
Language Concepts
  • Listen, compare and respond to them based literature
  • Identify story elements-characters, setting, problem and solution
  • Recognize beginning, middle and end of story sequence
  • Demonstrate an appreciation and love of books
  • Begin to read back own writing and share written work with others
  • Understand and follow one, two, and three-step spoken directions
Concepts About Print
  • Follow left to right progression of print
  • Identify parts of book
  • Match voice to print and point to text
  • Understand that print contains a message
  • Identify punctuation
Phonemic Awareness
  • Identify rhyme, repetition, rhythm and patterns in literature and poetry
  • Count the number of syllables in a word
  • Orally blend together spoken words
  • Orally segment words into parts
Interesting Words
  • Begin to acquire a basic sight vocabulary-includes high frequency words, names, colors, and environmental print
  • Distinguish letters from words and words from sentences
Letters and Sounds
  • Recognize letter names and their sounds
  • Print all capital and lowercase letters
  • Write first and last name with proper letters
  • Identify the beginning sounds and their corresponding letters
 

 
Math
 
York Suburban School District follows the Pennsylvania Standards of teaching children to understand and apply mathematical concepts by implementing the Everyday Mathematics Program. Home-links will be sent home to provide enrichment and details about lessons.
 
Throughout the kindergarten year students will work on the following concepts:
 
Counting and Cardinality
  • Know number names and write and recite the count sequence
  • Apply one-to-one correspondence to tell the numberof objects
  • Apply the concept of magnitude and compare numbers and quantities
Numbers and Operations - Base Ten
  • Use place value to compose and decompose numbers within 19
Operations and Algebraic Thinking
  • Extend the concepts of putting together and taking apart to add and subtract within 10
Geometry
  • Identify and describe two-and three-dimensional shapes
  • Analyze, compare, create, and compose two-and-three dimensional shapes
Measurement and Data
  • Describe and compare attributes of length, area, weight, and capacity of everyday objects
  • Classify objects and count the number of objects in each category
  • Recognize coins; tell time to the hour

Science and Social Studies
 
The Kindergarten Science and Social Studies curriculums are introduced using a thematic approach. The emphasis is on exposure to many different topics and ideas.

Social and Emotional
 
Kindergarten recognizes the need for advancing the social and emotional growth along with the academic curriculum.
 
Kindergarten students will:
  • work and play cooperatively
  • assume responsibilities
  • listen attentively
  • work independently (completing tasks in a reasonable amount of time)
  • accept constructive suggestions
  • follow directions and school rules
